NEW YORK (Microbytes Daily News Service) --- Everex displayed its
series of systems based on the Motorola 88000 RISC processor at
Unix Expo. Everex claims these systems, which are built around an
Opus 88000 board, will deliver between 17 and 21 MIPS of Unix
performance, while ensuring compliance with the 88open binary and
object compatibility standards. Configured with AT&T Unix System
V Release 4, the Step 8820 and 8825 will also be capable of
supporting TCP/IP, NFS, and the X Window System. MS-DOS support
is provided through an Intel coprocessor and an interface that
allows the user to hot-key between 88000 Unix and DOS. Files can
be transfered between the two file-system types, and commands
from both operating systems are always available, regardless of
which is visible at the time.

* Digiboard introduced an intelligent, multichannel NuBus
communication board that lets a Macintosh II running Apple's A/UX
Unix operating system act as a host computer for a multiuser
environment. The DigiChannel Nu/Xi, equipped with a 68000
processor and 256K of RAM, offers either 4 or 8 channels of
synchronous or asynchronous communication, as well as 4 DMA
channels. The 4-channel version sells for $995 and the 8-channel
for $1295.

* Computone Products demonstrated the Extended Communication
Controller (ECC) EISA-bus subsystem that it announced with
Olivetti at that company's recent unveiling of its 486-based EISA
computer. The ECC is a 32-bit bus-mastering asynchronous serial
controller that connects to an external cluster box. Each cluster
box can support up to 16 serial devices, and several ECCs can be
installed in a single Olivetti computer, permitting more than 100
users to be connected to a single system. The ECC costs $1595 and
each cluster box costs $1195.
