LAS VEGAS (Microbytes Daily News Service) --- Tatung Company of
America, a division of the Taiwanese giant, announced a 486-based
Micro Channnel computer at Comdex this week. The new TCS-9270
uses a 64K memory cache in addition to the built-in cache of the
486 and includes as standard 2 megabytes of RAM, VGA graphics,
four expansion slots (three 32-bit and one 16-bit), dual floppy
and ESDI disk controllers, and a variety of ports. It will be
available in the first quarter of 1990, the company said; the
price has not yet been set. In benchmark tests the TCS-9270
performed below other 486-based systems, but Tatung said the show
unit is a prototype in which the 486 burst mode capability is not
fully implemented.

Tatung also demonstrated a tower-type workstation based on Sun's
SPARC architecture, the first product to come out of the
licensing agreement signed between Sun and Tatung last June.
Tatung's VAR-station 1 (called on some company literature the
TWS-7000) is described as a SPARCstation clone that operates at
15 MIPS and includes 8 megabytes of RAM, a 110-megabyte hard disk
and 3.5-inch floppy, SCSI and Ethernet interfaces, and a Weitek
math coprocessor. Scheduled for delivery starting in the third
quarter of 1990, the workstation will list for roughly $7000,
Tatung said.
