Micronics Introduces Portable 486 with Color Monitor at Comdex

Micronics Computers, which started out as a motherboard supplier,
has now entered the systems business with its introduction of an
80486-based portable computer. This machine features a color
monitor and a 20-MHz 80386-based portable. True to its roots,
Micronics also introduced an 80486-based motherboard.
 
The standard 18-pound 80486 system has 2 megabytes of RAM
(upgradable to 16), a Phoenix BIOS, a 40-megabyte hard-disk
drive, a keyboard, 2 full-length EISA slots, and a driver for EGA
and VGA color graphics. Optional equipment is a 100-megabyte hard
disk drive.
 
The 80386 portable includes a monochrome VGA display, 2 to 8
megabytes of RAM, and a Phoenix BIOS.
 
The 80486 motherboard includes six 16-bit and two 8-bit slots, a
Phoenix BIOS, 1 to 16 megabytes of RAM, and a second-level cache
option of 64-, 128-, or 256K bytes of RAM.
 
All three products are scheduled to ship in production quantities
before the end of the first quarter.
 
Price: 80386, under $5000; 80486, under $8000; 80486-based
motherboard, under $4000.
