Yes, it's not too soon to start thinking about the dreaded
April 15 deadline, when most of us offer a portion of our wages
to Uncle Sam. ChipSoft reports that the new version of TurboTax
will begin shipping next week. TurboTax can help you prepare
your Personal/1040 tax return and plan your taxes for 1989 and
1990.

You start by answering a series of questions that help
determine the tax forms you'll need to use. Internal Revenue
Service instructions that are keyed to each line of the tax
form are available on line, and the program is shipped with the
Price Waterhouse Personal Tax Adviser book.

TurboTax includes pop-up notes that you can use to post
reminders. The program can link to 41 state versions of the
program, so that when you prepare your federal return, you're
also working on your state return.

Available schedules include D1, a second copy of F, Schedule 2
(Form 1040A), Forms 4952, 8283, 8808, and 8814. The program can
handle up to four what-if scenarios and includes a Tax Trivia
game.

TurboTax works on the IBM PC with DOS 2.0 or higher and 384K
bytes of RAM. With DOS 3.2 or higher, you'll need 512K bytes of
RAM. You can install the program on your hard disk drive or use
it on a dual-floppy system.

Price: $75; state version, $40 each.
