LEXINGTON, KY (Microbytes Daily News Service) --- IBM will allow
its customers to have access to the automation technology it has
used in its own manufacturing plants, the computer maker
announced last week. IBM announced hardware and software products
to go along with its computer-integrated manufacturing (CIM)
program.

IBM's CIM strategy is desinged to link the functional area of an
industrial enterprise (development, engineering, production
planning, and plant operations) with each other and with
marketing, business, and distribution operations. IBM's approach
is based on its Systems Application Architecture (SAA) and
Advanced Interactive Executive (AIX) platforms.

Among products the company announced in conjunction with CIM is
the System/370-based 6090 Graphics System for 3-D visualization
in CAD/CAM applications. The company has enhanced its DOS and
OS/2 CAD software. IBM CAD Version 1.2 offers improved 3-D
functions and other drafting features, IBM said; IBM CAD Plus
Version 1.2 provides the same functions but is also capable of
raster-to-vector conversion of scanned images.
