Qualstar Offers Smaller 9-Track Tape Drive

Qualstar says that its 3410-series of 9-track tape drives are
smaller and faster than their predecessorss. Production
quantities will be available in March. Software and hardware
interfaces for your XT, AT, DEC, and Macintosh computers will be
offered.
 
Each new Group Code Recording (GCR) drive measures measures 5.25
by 19, by 25 inches and includes utility software for backup, and
data interchange applications from ASCII to EBCDIC formats. Data
transfer has been increased to 125 inches per second, which is
about 800K bytes per second. Auto-loading means the 3410s will
automatically thread the 0.5-inch tape from your 7- or 10.5-inch
reels.
 
The Model 3410 supports the DMA data transfer mode, can read
800-bpi (bit per inch) tape densitie,s and can read/write to tape
densitites of 1600, 3200 and 6250 bpi. Read/write operations are
performed at 125 inches per second with a rewind speed of 440
ips. Maximum capacity is 250 megabytes on a 10.5-inch tape reel.
 
Price: XT- and AT-compatible, $8900; with SCSI interface, $9900.
